Blimps

From 2019 to 2020, we built and played the board game, created the pixel art, and programmed Blimps into a desktop and mobile video game. In January 2021, we released Blimps v1.3.5 on Steam. Since then, we have continued to update Blimps; the latest release is v2.4.8. We hope you enjoy the game. Thanks for playing!

Blimps is a top-down, multi-vehicular sandbox RPG and roguelite "escape room" built for solo captains and local couch co-op duos.
The surface world is running out of resources. Your ultimate objective is simple but monumental: find a way to escape it. To survive, you must master a steep learning curve, piece together a giant mechanical puzzle, and optimize your strategy across multiple play sessions. Every time you leave your Hangar, you are losing power, pollution clouds are spreading, and rival pirate blimps are multiplying across the sky. Time is ticking. Can you solve the world of Blimps before you are completely overwhelmed?
The Three Game Phases of The Sky
Your journey to escape is broken into a dynamic, shifting campaign where every second matters (10 real-world seconds equals 15 minutes of game time):
* The Opening Game: The Billionaire Space Race (Days 1–3): Race against ruthless corporate competitors—Space Y, Nile X, and Sir Space—to reach the Moon. Recruit 10 VIP crew members and secure 10 Golden Cargo crates to launch a rocket to the Moon (and maybe even a hidden silo to Mars) to locate the mythical Moon Crystal. Secure first place within 3 game days to claim a $1,000,000 reward!
* The Middle Game: The Sandbox Expansion: With the timed space race settled, the world expands into a building and survival playground. Establish solar and fusion towns, fight to become the King of the Seven Kingdoms, and take on arcade mini-games to boost your ultimate score.
* The End Game: The Earth Drill Escape: Use the Moon Crystal to power your Earth Drill beneath your Hangar. Educate and train your crew, power up and board your drill, and plunge to the center of the Earth paradise before the surface collapses.
Dynamic Elemental (Water>Fire>Ice) Warfare and Arcade Mini-Games
Break away from the hangar and cockpit to complete tasks that grant game-changing score bonuses, gold, and ship upgrades:
* Tactical Dogfights: Engage rivals in fast-paced twin-stick shooting or close-quarters, elemental "Rock-Paper-Scissors" combat (Water douses Fire, Fire melts Ice, Ice freezes Water).
* 4-Floor Dungeon Crawl: Descend in a mini earth drill into Goldgotts Dungeon. Extinguish flames with your water gun to harvest fire ammo, and smash rocks with your shovel plow to extract raw gold. Battle Shiska Bob, a giant flame boss, on the bottom floor! Smelt the raw gold into bars after each run and use them to upgrade your Blimp's size and specs.
* Side-Scrolling Side View Gauntlet: Fly and shoot through a 2D platformer highway. Pop open hot-air balloon crates to steal gold bars, shoot down cyberplane minions, and battle The Dogcatcher—a pirate blimp captained by an annoying barking dog.
* 2D Top-Down Cyberpunk Motorcycle Race: Switch gears entirely and drop onto a neon-drenched track. Race solo or with a partner through a dark cyberpunk setting to gather 8 glowing crystals. Deposit them into 8 active turret towers to win 8 precious gemstones, then secure them at the Gemstone Greenhouse to claim your race winnings!
* Multi-Vehicular Mastery: Take control of deep-sea submarines, earth-drilling machines, hot-air balloons, motorcycles, slingshots, and even a funicular!
 A Replayable, Hardcore Roguelite Puzzle
Blimps does not hold your hand. It is a deep, intricate system designed for multiple runs. While a perfect first-time escape is possible for the most meticulous captains, true mastery comes from learning what to do, when to do it, and how to optimize your route.
* Use your in-game Captain's Log to track complex missions and the H.E.L.P. Computer for game advice.
* Finish the entire gauntlet in under 60 minutes without using console cheat codes to secure an ultimate high-score bonus!

Grab a friend and share the cockpit! Blimps features local two-player couch co-op. Built from the ground up for native controller support, the entire game maps flawlessly to gamepads, desktop setups, and the Steam Deck.
