The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought from February 19th to March 26th 1945. It was one of the most intense and costly battles of the Pacific War during World War II. The small volcanic island was strategically vital due to its location and would serve as an emergency landing strip for damaged bombers. U.S. Marines faced fierce resistance from nearly 21,000 Japanese defenders, who had constructed an extensive network of underground bunkers, tunnels, and fortified positions.

Despite overwhelming naval and aerial bombardment, the battle devolved into brutal close-quarters combat across the island’s rugged terrain with Mount Suribachi being the most iconic. After more than five weeks of fighting, U.S. forces secured Iwo Jima at a cost of nearly 7,000 American lives, with over 19,000 wounded, making it one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history. If the nearly 21,000 Japanese defenders, only 867 survived and were taken prisoner. The battle is best remembered for the iconic photograph of Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, an image that came to symbolize the sacrifice and perseverance needed to win the war.PACK INFO:
