Over 70 years old, this airport is a common stop for international and domestic flights, however JFK Airport is also a major hub for air cargo, handling over 2 million tons of freight annually.

The airport covers 5,200 acres or 21 square kilometers (8.1 sq mi). Over 25 miles (40 km) of paved taxiways allow aircraft to move around the airfield. 

The air traffic control tower constructed on the ramp-side of Terminal 4, began full FAA operations in October 1994. At the time of its completion, the JFK tower, at 320 feet (98 m), was the world's tallest control tower.
