It has been a year since Tavi's successful rebellion, and he now sits upon the throne as Indra's undisputed king. The former monarch, Yuel, has been deposed, and all of Yuel's former advisors believe him to be dead. Tavi wouldn't be foolish enough to keep such a huge threat to the throne alive, after all...

For all of the bad blood between them, Tavi can't bring himself to have Yuel executed. For all Yuel's myriad crimes, he remains Tavi's younger cousin, and Tavi feels duty-bound to protect him, even from himself. In sparing Yuel's life, Tavi means to perform an act of kindness, but Yuel doesn't see it that way.

Living as a prisoner in the palace for a year, unable to see his former wife or his young child, Yuel is beginning to despair. Though he appreciates Tavi for sparing his life, his fond feelings towards his older cousin begin to warp into something rather more twisted as the weeks, then the months, slip by.

Tavi says that he loves Yuel, but how can he, when Tavi stole his life from him? Yuel knows he ought to hate his older cousin, and part of him does — but when Tavi suffers from a great tragedy, Yuel finds himself at a crossroads. Can he really bring himself to console the man who ruined his life?
