The ad in the paper was only three lines long. Night operator wanted. Remote antenna station. No experience needed.

Nobody mentioned that the station was shut down in 1959. Nobody mentioned why it still has power.

In the autumn of 1958, the big dish on the hill picked up something that wasn't weather and wasn't a satellite. It was a voice. Small, far away, singing. The man who heard it first stayed at his post for days, then weeks. After a while he stopped going home at all.

The station has been hiring ever since. Every few years someone answers the ad, sits down in the same chair and listens to the same static. A few of them quit. The rest are still here, in a way. You'll meet them in the halls after midnight.

Your shift starts with the walk up the hill, through the fog and the fences that never seem to stand in the same place twice. Then it's you and the terminal. Keep the towers running, one repair at a time. When the signal drops, find the right code on the old red television before it slips away. Check the cameras. Cut the main power when something gets too close, shut the front window when something looks in, and keep quiet, because this building carries sound much further than it should. You have one flashlight and one battery. Spend it carefully.

And every night, the phone rings.

The man on the other end is calm and polite, and he tells you exactly what to do. Most nights he sounds fine. Some nights he loses his place halfway through a sentence and starts talking about a little girl, a blue radio, and a Sunday he never came home for. Then he clears his throat and carries on as if nothing happened.

He always ends the call the same way.
