The Legend of Chalkvania is a compact, open-world side-scrolling action RPG inspired by classic adventures.
You are the reluctant Guardian of the Chalklands. It is your duty to protect its peculiar inhabitants. Most of whom are completely unhelpful.
Roam a handcrafted monochrome kingdom at your own pace. Hunt monsters, follow rumours, take paid jobs, collect powerful gear, fish quiet waters, cook beside a campfire or simply return home and sit down for a while.
The world may be ending, but there is no need to be unreasonable about it.
Restore the Sword of Grayscale
The legendary Sword of Grayscale was forged to imprison an ancient evil threatening the Chalklands.
Now the sword lies shattered. Its fragments are scattered across the kingdom, the seal is weakening, and the princess who once protected the land has fallen into what appears to be a permanent nap.
Recover the fragments, uncover the truth behind the growing darkness and decide the fate of the Chalklands - preferably without making the situation considerably worse.
A Small World to Explore
Chalkvania is a compact, interconnected kingdom built to be explored, revisited and gradually understood.
Roads branch, hidden paths reward curiosity, and weapons or useful equipment can open routes that were previously out of reach. Follow the main story or wander away from it in search of treasure, peculiar characters and suspiciously specific rumours hidden inside old books.
There is usually something interesting just beyond the path you were supposed to follow.
Work, Hunt and Maintain Hobbies
Saving the world is important. It is not, apparently, a full-time position.
Accept paid work from notice boards, help the locals with side quests and track every defeated monster in your Guardian Record. Reach hunting milestones to earn new titles, Gold and useful rewards.
When monster hunting becomes tiresome, catch fish, combine ingredients at campfires, rest at home or offer an item to the Old Oak and see what comes back. The tree has an exchange policy. It has simply declined to explain it.
Your journal keeps track of quests, jobs, discoveries and pending rewards, leaving you free to focus on whichever crisis currently seems most interesting.
Fight Your Way Forward
Combat is deliberate, readable and built around learning how each enemy behaves.
Fight with whips, bows, throwing knives, flintlock weapons, the Blunderbuss and other equipment discovered throughout the kingdom. Hunt familiar monsters, confront stranger creatures and survive staged boss encounters guarding the sword’s missing fragments.
Trade with merchants, discover weapons and armour, manage ammunition and prepare the right equipment before venturing somewhere unpleasant.

The Legend of Chalkvania is a focused adventure designed around memorable places rather than an enormous map filled with chores.
Complete the main journey in a few satisfying hours, or take your time exploring hidden routes, finishing jobs, filling the Guardian Record and discovering the kingdom’s stranger diversions.
