Story Background
From Zizhi Tongjian, Volume 204, Tang Annals XX
Zhou Xing falsely accused Wei Xuantong, claiming: “The Empress Dowager is advanced in years. It would be wiser to uphold the crown prince for lasting peace.” Enraged, the Empress Dowager ordered Wei Xuantong to commit suicide at home on the Jiawu day of the intercalary month… Countless civil and military officials were executed, exiled or demoted over this case.
Wei Xuantong passed the jinshi examination. The Chi family had long maintained close ties with him, yet Wei clashed bitterly with the cruel magistrate Zhou Xing. Favored by the Empress Dowager, Zhou framed Wei for treason. Infuriated upon hearing the accusation, the Empress Dowager sentenced Wei to death at his residence. The Chi clan, implicated by association, escaped execution but was exiled to Lingnan.
