Gateway to Headquarters City

The Gateway to Headquarters City virtual exhibition offers an opportunity to explore Mikkeli’s military history exhibitions virtually. Mikkeli served as the headquarters city of Finland during the Second World War, first during the Winter War in 1939–1940 and later during the Continuation War in 1941–1944. The headquarters were located in an old school building, which today houses the Muisti Centre of War and Peace and the Headquarters Museum. The city is also home to the Infantry Museum, which presents the traditions and history of the Finnish infantry in an old military barracks area.
 
Explore the interactive map, discover the historical sites, and immerse yourself in the stories. Play, experience and discover: What was life like on the front line? How were messages communicated during the war? How do history and the present day meet? Guided by Ilmo, a young messenger boy from the Headquarters, you can discover the most interesting sites and hear stories from both the home front and the front line. This is not an exhibition simply to look at – it is an exhibition to experience.

The exhibition has been developed as part of the New Digital Solutions in the Museum and Travel Industry – DigiMatka project. The project has been co-funded by the Regional Council of South Savo from European Regional Development Fund. The exhibition is available in two languages: Finnish and English.
