What begins as a single locked-room murder soon reveals something far larger.
A trail of black glass chess pieces, coded brass mechanisms, hidden passageways, murdered custodians, and carefully constructed crime scenes leads Holmes toward the Nocturne Society, an exclusive secret organization buried beneath London's aristocratic world. Its members include politicians, financiers, nobles, and other powerful figures whose private lives are protected by an enormous archive of secrets.
Someone is systematically killing the people connected to that archive.
And every crime has been designed for Sherlock Holmes to solve.
The investigation becomes even more complicated when Evelyn Blackwood returns to London.
Elegant, intelligent, dangerous, and impossible for Holmes to treat as simply another source of information, Evelyn shares a complicated history with him that began years earlier in Paris. She also knows far more about Nocturne than she initially admits.
