Lost Gaijin

Lost Gaijin is a Japanese-learning text adventure set inside a persistent, AI-directed simulation of 1994 Japan.
You step off a local train in rural Japan with ¥250,000, a paper address, and almost no Japanese. There is no smartphone, translation app, or GPS. The station attendant asks for your ticket.
What do you do?

Type anything. Begin in English, mix in whatever Japanese you know, and use more as you learn. The Storyteller turns your choices into an ongoing adventure. The Coach reads each reply, gives feedback on your Japanese, and shows you a natural way to express what you meant.
There is no fixed dialogue tree and no correct route. The world takes your attempts seriously, and the story is whatever happens next.

Learn Because You Need It
The study schedule hides underneath the story. Every kanji you encounter becomes part of a personalized spaced-repetition system. Writing it correctly pushes its next review further away; struggling brings it back sooner. Each reading is tracked separately, because recognizing 食 as しょく does not necessarily mean you know it as た in 食べる.

Explore every prefecture and 3,374 municipalities drawn from official 1995 boundary data. Travel by describing what you want to do: catch a train to Matsuyama, walk toward the coast, or try to find the address folded in your pocket. Routes follow the real connections between places, so getting somewhere is part of the adventure.
Hourly weather reconstructed from historical climate records follows you across the country. A humid Shikoku afternoon drains your thirst. Winter in Hokkaidō demands the right clothes. Rain makes the umbrella in your bag matter.
Take care of yourself: hunger, thirst, rest, and energy change as the clock moves. Neglecting them can affect your ability to communicate.

Account for every yen: meals, tickets, purchases, and earnings are recorded as events in your personal story.

Carry only what fits: bags have limited slots and weight, while food, clothing, and other items have practical uses.

Create your traveler: customize their appearance and build a distinctly 1994 wardrobe whose clothing affects how weather treats them.
