Color Me Afraid

Sorting is how you survive.
You wake in a vast, crooked library. The color has drained out of everything, and something tall and pale walks its aisles at night. The only door is locked. Thousands of crayons lie scattered across the floor, and putting them back where they belong is the only way out.
Color is protection
Every finished tray you shelve brings color back to that part of the library, for good. Restore enough of a section and it becomes safe ground: the creature cannot enter it, cannot cross it and cannot reach you inside it. Where you sort by day decides where you can stand at night.
The dark belongs to it
At nightfall the creature comes in through the exit door. It patrols what is still gray, hunts anything it sees there and searches where it last saw you. Break its line of sight behind the shelves, slip back to restored ground, or keep sorting with your heart in your throat. A section finished at night is safe at once.
