Cheat or Fold is a single-player programming game built around No-Limit Texas Hold'em. Face computer opponents at the poker table while developing your own software on a virtual retro desktop. Analyze hands, automate decisions, and discover how to manipulate the simulated poker client.
Your code isn't just an extra feature. It's how you get ahead.
From the poker table to your own programs
At first, you play your hands yourself. Then maybe you write a small script to evaluate your cards or help with difficult decisions. Before long, you're building programs that react to events, play hands automatically, and work across multiple poker tables.
You'll use a custom Python-like scripting language, with a code editor, terminal, and interactive console to test your ideas. Keep what works. Investigate what doesn't. Then improve your code and try again.
And as you learn more about the client, you'll discover that there's more to explore than ordinary poker strategy.
Better code doesn't guarantee better poker
Your opponents have different playing styles. A strategy that works at one table might fail at the next. You'll need to observe, analyze, and adapt your programs.
Your virtual computer has limits, too. Scripts consume processing time and memory, while better hardware costs credits. Inefficient code can be expensive. Sometimes a smarter algorithm is worth more than a faster processor.
Play every hand yourself, automate individual decisions, or run several poker clients at once. It's up to you.
Experiment, understand, improve
You're writing actual code and developing your own solutions. A debugger, runtime statistics, and other tools help you track down errors and improve your programs.
The free in-game sandbox lets you experiment without risking your earned credits. Editable examples and detailed built-in manuals help you get started and provide a reference as your projects grow more ambitious.
You don't need to be an experienced programmer. But you should enjoy solving problems, experimenting with ideas, and learning from your mistakes.
